Turnitin: Learn More

What is Turnitin?

Turnitin is a commercial service licensed by VUW for use by all staff and courses.

We currently subscribe to the OriginalityCheck which compares submitted work with digital content, current and archived, including academic, commercial journals and publications.

Who uses Turnitin?

Turnitin as a product can be used by academic staff and students.

Academics who are using Turnitin in their courses must inform students of its use prior to submission of assessment, read more about this on the Turnitin policies and Notices page.

Why should I use Turnitin?

Turnitin provides a mechanism for automatically comparing student assessed work with a wide variety of Internet materials and the work of other students so as to facilitate the detection of plagiarism and other forms of cheating.

It is important to emphasise that Turnitin merely compares text, it is not able to judge whether or not material is properly cited and used - that decision remains at the judgement of the academic staff assessing the work.

Please familiarise yourself with the Turnitin Policies and Notices before setting up Turnitin assignments.
